Digital Marketing Glossary
I was asked the other day if there was a glossary of terms that a digital marketeer might use. As far as I know there isn’t – until now. If there are any you think are missing, drop me a note.
- Aggregator – an aggregator website gets its content from other sites, typically by XML or scraping
- BT – Behavioural Targeting
- CSS – Cascading Style Sheets – a way for web pages to define their look. Cascading is because there is a hierarchy to the commands on a page.
- HTML – Hypertext Markup Language (the language of the web)
- metaTags – parts of the HTML web page not seen by users but read by the search engines.
- ORM – Online Reputation Management
- PPC – pay per click (used when talking about paid for campaigns)
- PPM – Pay per Mille (cost per thousand clicks when talking about banner click based campaigns)
- reTweet – sending a tweet you have received, on.
- PingBack – a way for one website to know if another is linking to it. [wikipedia]
- Podcast – an audio recording that when made available through sites uch as iTunes, users can download (usually for free) and subscribe to for their iPods
- RSS – Really Simple Syndication (a format for transferring information between sites – typically news)
- Scraping – a method of extracting content from another website.
- Tweet – what someone does on twitter when they send a message
- Vodcast – a video version of a Podcast
- XML – eXtensible Markup Language (a more sophisticated markup language)
